The Role of Formative Assessment in Online Higher Education
Teaching, learning, and assessment are a key part of faculty and student interactions. How faculty interact with students through the learning process is an opportunity for continual professional development to provide value-added learning opportunities. The role of formative assessment in the student learning process within online higher education has many benefits and challenges and is largely void in the literature with the focus on face-to-face instruction. This presentation adds to online formative assessment by addressing how formative assessment functions in faculty professional development to maximize teaching effectiveness in online higher education within competency-based education. Various formative assessment characteristics, techniques, and opportunities are identified for one-on-one and one-to-many student interactions and based on types of summative assessment used to measure student knowledge.
