Leaders are symbols. Their language and behavior influence how stakeholders perceive, think and behave. Leadership is symbolic stimulating metaphors integrating and informed by our earliest impressions and experiences associated with order, power and authority. Leaders harnessing the power and potential inherent in leadership as symbol, as well as an institutional artifact can intentionally influence cultural and business outcomes. As organizational leaders search for new strategies and methods for unleashing the potential embedded in their stakeholders and workforces, culturally resident symbols and metaphors such as leadership can employed to engage these populations advancing them towards improved performance and exceeding expectations. The transformative influence of symbols and metaphors is well documented in both the traditional and modern psychoanalytic literatures. There use in developing entrepreneurial and organizational leaders can fuel organizational performance.
